Editorial Reviews

Review

"A memorable—and deeply personal—journey into the hearts and minds of those who carry on the shamanic traditions of ayahuasca."—Rich Doblin, founder of MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies

“An excellent work! This is definitely the best thing I've read on ayahuasca tourism, and beyond that, the whole apparent reemergence of shamanic consciousness as a force for change and evolution on a global scale.”—Ethnopharmacologist Dennis McKenna, PhD, author of The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss

“As Razam so aptly demonstrates, a new kind of traveler is emerging—one that embarks into the mysterious and uncharted domain within, where they aim to conquer their own hearts. Written in the tradition of a great adventure narrative, Aya Awakenings is a timely story for a new emerging era.”—Yossi Ghinsberg, author of Lost in the Jungle

“The best Canterbury Tales of the modern pilgrimage to Iquitos.”—Richard Meech, filmmaker, director of the documentary Vine of the Soul: Encounters with Ayahuasca

About the Author

RAK RAZAM is a new wave entheogenic researcher and the cofounder of Undergrowth.org, Australia's leading online counterculture arts and literature magazine, and the Icaros Foundation. An author, freelance journalist, and editor, he specializes in underground and counterculture communities, spirituality, and technology. He has written features for The Age, Dazed and Confused magazine and Dazed Digital, Disinfo.com, Reality Sandwich, High Times, Filmmaker magazine, Australian Penthouse, and many other publications.

More About the Author

Rak Razam is the author of two books: AYA Awakenings: A Shamanic Odyssey (Nov 5, 2013 from North Atlantic Books), a travel-memoir of his time with shamans in the Peruvian Amazon and a companion volume of interviews: The Ayahuasca Sessions, (North Atlantic Books May, 2014). He is also the editor of The Journeybook, a collected anthology of psychedelic writing from Undergrowth publishing. His popular global podcast, In a Perfect World, charts the meetings, musings and collective dreamings of the Ultraculture of the 21st century.

In 2006 Razam visited Peru on a feature magazine assignment to see what the almost mythical archetype of the shaman was really like in the 21st century. Excerpts from AYA, A Shamanic Odyssey have been published in Australian Penthouse (Sept 2006); High Times (Aug 2007); and Filmmaker magazine online (Oct 2007). He was also interviewed and appears in the CBC's 2007 audio documentary In Search of the Divine Vegetal talking about his ayahuaca experiences, which has been broadcast twice due to special demand to millions of people throughout North America.

A founding editor of Undergrowth, Australia's leading counterculture arts and literature magazine, Razam is an "experiential journalist" that participates in the experiences he writes about, giving his global audience an intimate familiarity with his subjects. This has made for some rollicking adventures on the fringes of the counterculture, which have been published globally and recounted in his writings. The author is available for interviews about the book and to talk about the resurgence of ayahuasca use and global shamanism.

Rak Razam makes me want to take the ayahusca journey. I have heard about it from freinds in Australia but it has so much more relevance when reading about his journey ino the inner mind launching him on his psychonaut visions. The cleansing aspect of ayahusca really appeals to me. I have even emailed the Guilermo ayahusca retreat in Iquitos in Peru to find out about the cost of travelling there. He describes things so well that are by his own admission beyond words. He also says things how they are and doesn't make all the practitioners to be all love and light but exposes those who are in it for the money or too boost their ego. Well written. Rarely is it that I read a book that calls to me and says you need to do this.

I was reading this while down in peru drinking the spirit vine for months and this book is unimpressive. it is an expanded piece form something he was set to (or did) write for playboy Australia, and his writing is of that caliber, which is to say, a bad attempt at "gonzo". the content is at times interesting (aya itself I am in awe of) but incredibly self indulgent and proud. although he does show some interesting components of the modern aya movement, it is donr in "whirlwind tour" kind of way and its just way too surface. watch jan kounen's "other worlds" instead.

This is a great book on Ayahuasca tourism and Rak is the perfect person to write it. I really enjoyed his perspective on the places I've visited. I would have liked to hear about his views on ceremonies at Blue Morpho, although he did have a talk with Hamilton. I'm right at the end of the book and highly recommend it.
